The fire bowl is cleaned with a solvent prior to packaging but no chemicals are used in the base metal, so cooking over this copper fire pit is completely safe. To make absolutely certain that all residual solvent is gone, you should burn a normal fire in the pit. After this first fire, the pit is primed and ready for cooking.
